In Kody’s words:
Access to queer representation and affirming supports is an essential component to queer mental health and general wellbeing. While this has since been proven through research, for me, this knowledge is deeply rooted in my own experiences.
Struggling with the normal pressures of adolescence, greatly exacerbated by then-unnamed and undiagnosed gender dysphoria and neurodivergence, I found myself a teenager in a therapist’s chair educating her about basic concepts of gender and sexuality. Despite my efforts to explain, I never felt seen or understood in our sessions, which were rarely helpful. Luckily, my (visibly queer) English teacher did see me and how alone I felt - her above-and-beyond efforts to be a support and role model for me very likely saved my life.
A few years later, as a freshman in college, I began providing identity development workshops at queer youth conferences. As I grew into my professional career, this drive to promote queer representation and equitable care overpowered my considerable stage fright; I’ve led professional development workshops, in-service trainings, and systems-level advocacy for queer-affirming and trauma-informed mental health care at conferences, state agencies, educational institutions, and nonprofits across CT, MA, and RI, plus New York state and Broward County, Florida.
Even when I was working in roles not specific to serving our communities, I intentionally sought to pave the way for future queer professionals by being openly trans and nonbinary in the workplace; in each role, I was the first.
The guiding light of my personal and professional development, education, and career has been this passion for advocacy and action in service of increased queer representation and access to informed and affirming care for those in the LGBTQIA+ community and anyone else who finds themselves marginalized by systems that were built by and for the heteronormative and neurotypical majority - and it is now the heart of Transformation Clinical Services.
